About the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Football’s biggest event will take center stage on November 21 to December 18 as the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held for the second time in Asia, with Qatar as this edition’s host.
The Netherlands and the United States return after missing the cut in 2018. Meanwhile, Wales and Canada qualify for the first time this millennium, after they last reached this stage in 1958 and 1986, respectively. Germany, Spain, and Brazil are out to have a better showing this time after relatively dismal performances four years ago.
Will defending champion France be able to repeat? Will the Jules Rimet Trophy finally come home to England? Will either Argentina or Portugal win it all now that their respective legends are on the last legs of their storied careers? Will Belgium become a first-time champion?
These questions will be answered by the end of the year.
History of the FIFA World Cup
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd time the tournament will be held.
No team has won back-to-back championships since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Only countries from Europe and South America have played in the final; UEFA member nations winning it 12 times.
Four-time champions and reigning European champions Italy failed to qualify for the second successive World Cup. They are the only multiple-time titleholder that would not be competing in 2022.

World Cup 2022 Group Stage Betting Tips and Prediction
Team List
Short Intro
Group A contains the host of FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar and king of AFCON 2022 Senegal. Meanwhile, the Netherlands is among the contenders for the trophy, and Ecuador is a tough opponent.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Netherlands - 1.43 | Senegal - 5
Ecuador - 7 | Qatar - 15 |
Favorite Teams
The Netherlands and Senegal are clear favorites to finish the group as winners. The Oranje's absence from the last World Cup in Russia was heartbreaking to their fans, but Louis van Gaal’s army look promising. The Lions of Teranga, the defending African champions, are one of the five African nations competing in this year's World Cup, and they are packed with talent.
However, it will be naive to underestimate Qatar and Ecuador. Despite the fact that this is their first World Cup participation in history, the host will try their best, as they play in front of a supportive crowd in some of the best stadiums built exclusively for the World Cup this year. Ecuador will be competing in their fourth World Cup (2002, 2006, 2014), previously making it to the round of 16 in 2006.
The Underdogs
Qatar has quite an advantage playing on their own turf. But the lack of experience may hinder them from going far. Ecuador claimed the fourth and final automatic World Cup slot in the South American qualifiers, ahead of other powerhouses, so it will be no surprise to see La Tri, under Gustavo Julio Alfaro, pull off a surprise effort.
Possible Outcome
The Netherlands and Senegal to qualify for the next round. Ecuador may struggle, but one to three points are no mission impossible for the South American team.
Team List
Short Intro
It is one of the groups of death in the desert, on and off the pitch. Expect fireworks right before kickoff, with storylines too many to mention as politics and sport meet in this contingent of four.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
England - 1.3 | Wales - 7 | |
USA - 7 | Iran - 21 |
Favorite Teams
Based on their rosters' depth, it is safe to say that both England and the United States are the overwhelming favorites to emerge out of this group of death. Gareth Southgate's Three Lions of Jadon Sancho, Harry Maguire, and Harry Kane are in win-now mode to make sure that the FIFA World Cup Trophy finally comes home once more after 1966. Gregg Berhalter's Yanks have their marquee generation comprised of Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie.
However, do not count out Gareth Bale and Wales, which finally made it to the World Cup after 64 years of waiting.
The Underdogs
Iran has a returning Carlos Queiroz on short notice, and will come to Qatar as the heaviest underdogs despite being one of Asia's best sides. Factors on and off the pitch, as well as domestic turmoil, might take a toll on Team Melli's drive to glory.
Possible Outcome
England will be easy favorites to win Group B, Wales to pip USA for second.
Team List
Short Intro
This can be considered a group of death, as it is composed of tremendous names: Argentina, the reigning champions of Copa América; Mexico, runnerup at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup; Poland, which beat Sweden in the second round of the European qualifiers; and Saudi Arabia, a direct qualifier from AFC.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Argentina - 1.4 | Mexico - 5.5
Poland - 5.5 | Saudi Arabia - 31 |
Favorite Teams
This is a diverse group with representatives from four different FIFA confederations: CONMEBOL (Argentina), CONCACAF (Mexico), UEFA (Poland), and AFC (Saudi Arabia). At first glance, Argentina and Mexico stand out as contenders.
La Albiceleste are being led by the GOAT: Lionel Messi, who maybe is having his last dance in the biggest stage of football. Joining Messi are the likes of Rodrigo de Paul, Ángel di María, and Emiliano Martinez. The two-time World Cup winners might have the oldest squad, but as the same time, also the most experienced.
The second and last ticket out of Group C can be decided by the duel between Poland and Mexico. El Tri are coming to Qatar with Raúl Jiménez, Héctor Moreno, and veteran Guillermo Ochoa, while Poland is led by the prolific Robert Lewandowski, the Orły's all-time leading scorer. It is tough to guess, but the Poles are slightly better.
Saudi Arabia, while should not be written off, has never made it out of the group stage despite competing in five editions since 1994.
The Underdogs
Poland is the underdog, because aside from Lewandowski, the national team coach can also count on players like Krzysztof Piątek, Mateusz Klich, Kamil Glik, Piotr Zieliński, and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. Though ending up at the bottom at the last World Cup, this year could be different.
Possible Outcome
Argentina and Poland to qualify for the next round, Mexico and Saudi Arabia will cause little trouble to the former two and early exits are imminent.
Team List
Short Intro
Reigning champion France is joined by fellow European team Denmark, international play-off qualifier Australia, as well as 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinalist Tunisia. This is an interesting and diverse cast of squads, the attention being on Les Bleus as they are aiming to be the first defending champs to play in the knockout stage since Brazil in 2006.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
France - 1.35 | Denmark - 4
Australia - 13 | Tunisia - 16 |
Favorite Teams
Based on the rankings and odds, France and Denmark are the runaway winners of Group D. And this is hard to argue against. Tunisia should have been a Pot D team if the play-off winners are placed in the appropriate pot according to their rank during the draw. On the other hand, Australia has not gone past the group stage since 2006, when the Socceroos beat the voodoo curse cast on them.
The Underdogs
Unless the two European sides suffer a disaster of catastrophic proportions, the best the two teams outside looking in can do is play spoilers. If either of them manages to do that, maybe they could have that slim chance of making it to the following round. The money is on Australia, as they are the one that has reached the knockout stage before.
Possible Outcome
France and Denmark to qualify for next round, France to win the group.
Team List
Short Intro
Group E is the concensus group of death, with two of the last three champs in it. Spain and Germany are battling Asian and South American representatives Japan and Costa Rica, respectively.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Spain - 1.9 | Germany - 2.1
Japan - 11 | Costa Rica - 35 |
Favorite Teams
Spain and Germany alone make this group worth following.
From 2008 to 2012, Spain was quite simply the best team in the world with their Euro and World Cup domination. The power may have shifted somewhat in a decade, but a revival could be on the cards. Both teams are now at one of their best stages with the mix of experience and youth. Pedri is on his way to become Xavi's heir, while Joshua Kimmich has already proven his worth for Die Mannschaft.
If Japan follows the pattern of their last six World Cup appearances, they are likely to be have an early exit, as the Samurai Blue have never gone further than the round of 16. Meanwhile, central American contingent Costa Rica is not to be undermined, as they stunned the world in 2014, making it all the way to the quarterfinals, only getting defeated on shootout by the Netherlands.
The Underdogs
In Russia, Japan was within 20 minutes of making it to the quarterfinals when Belgium fought back from two goals down. This year, they go into the group as the underdogs. The Japanese team have some influential players on the world stage. The names to look out for at the Qatar 2020 World Cup include Liverpool's Minamino Takumi, as well as Tomiyasu Takehiro of Arsenal.
Possible Outcome
Spain and Germany qualifying to the next round is the most possible scenario. It remains to be seen which of them will finish top and second, that is why the battle between the two toward the end of November will be decisive and crucial.
Team List
Short Intro
2018 FIFA World Cup runner up Croatia is in the group with another contender in Belgium. Along with them are Morocco from Africa and surprise entry Canada. Although the teams from Europe are head and shoulders above their competition, do not discount the other two as they might pull off a surprise.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Belgium - 1.53 | Croatia - 3.3
Morocco - 11 | Canada - 16 |
Favorite Teams
The numbers alone show which countries on Group F are most likely to advance. De Rode Duivels have remained steadfast since breaking out in the 2018 World Cup window. They have a hardened core of veteran players who are at their peak. It is hard to find a weak spot on any position. Croatia, on the other hand, is riding on their second place finish in 2018. Vatreni might have tapered off at the UEFA Euro 2020, but they topped their group at the UEFA Nations League and defeated Denmark in both of their matchups.
The Underdogs
Not much is expected from Canada, but their fans are already excited and eager on how they would perform on the biggest stage after a 26-year absence. There will be only two modes for the Maple Leafs: they are happy to be there or they will fight until the end. Either way, they will be the feel-good story of this edition. Between the two qualifiers from North America and Africa, Morocco is the one that have built more international cred in recent years. A consistent KO round ornament at the AFCON, The Atlas Lions were in the big dance four years ago.
Possible Outcome
Belgium and Croatia to qualify for next round, Belgium to win the group.
Team List
Short Intro
A 2018 reunion is happening in this group with the five-time champions taking on the same two European sides from last time. Joining the party is one of Africa's giants.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Brazil - 1.4 | Switzerland - 5.5
Serbia - 7 | Cameroon - 15 |
Favorite Teams
Just like on Group E four years ago, it will be Brazil and Switzerland as the clear faves. With the dearth of attackers at his disposal, Tite posseses one of the most talented sides in A Seleção's already colorful and glorious history.
With the Serbia versus Switzerland fixture occuring as one of the last matches, the Swiss have a psychological leg up. Two of the key men from the Rossocrociati that delivered the goods four years ago will still haunt the Serbians.
The Underdogs
Les Lions Indomptables might have their own share of talent, but their players lack experience at this level. It might be harsh to say, but a point against any of their three opponents woudl be a huge win for Rigobert Song.
Possible Outcome
Brazil to win the group with maximum points. Switzerland to pip Serbia.
Team List
Short Intro
This is most likely Cristiano Ronaldo's last hurrah. However, he has to go through some tough opponents in the group stage that might be able to spoil what could be his farewell party.
First off is ever reliable Uruguay with a Luis Suárez who could be in his last legs as well. And then there is Korea Republic and Son Heung-min, the man responsible for eliminating Germany in 2018. Finally, there is Ghana, a consistent source of talent from Africa.
Betting Odds
(Group Winner)
Portugal - 1.66 | Uruguay - 3
Ghana - 12 | South Korea - 12 |
Favorite Teams
It is easy to dismiss this group as Portugal's and Uruguay's warm up before they face opposition from Group F on the round of 16. And rightly so.
Os Navegadores have one of the youngest lineups going into the competition, Ronaldo notwithstanding. But they are not just kids looking to gain reps, they are first team players who are playing on top of their game in the club level right now.
Uruguay's credibility precedes them, and sometimes that is enough to put them through. La Celeste are equal parts unassuming and threatening.
The Underdogs
As long as Son Heung-min is in top form, Korea's fairy tale is far from over. All that remains to be seen from the Taegeuk Warriors is not just complete upsets, but to travel far in their journey. Whether they pull it off this time remains to be seen.
Ghana is one of those African teams with high profile names. What is lacking are results.
Possible Outcome
Portugal and Uruguay to qualify for next round, Portugal to win the group
